Globe Telecom - RP's Second Largest Cellular-phone Operator [ Login to Propose An Edit ]

Globe Handyphone is the mobile brand of Globe Telecom. At present, Globe Handyphone (of which the name Globe is most commonly used on) is the Philippines second largest mobile operator / provider of digital wireless communication services in the Philippines using a full digital network based on the Global System services. Globe owns 100 % of Innove Communications, Inc., which currently operates a cellular service under the Touch Mobile (TM) prepaid brand as well as offers a broad range of wireline voice and data communication services.

GT continues to be a part of the revolution that's connecting millions of people accross the Philippines and around the world with more than 21 million mobile subscribers.

The company provides prepaid wireless and voice-over-IP services. Subsidiary Innove Communications serve about 400,000 consumer and  commercial customers primarily with wireline voice and internet services. Globe targets the mainstream market while the Touch Mobile service targets mainly blue-collar workers.

3G usage is split between SMART/PLDT and Globe Telecom two-to-one as shown in the table below.

Sun Cellular may get additional share by end of this year once they market their 3G services. Umobile on the otherhand, though an autonomous telco is still considered s Smart/PLDT property.

Globe Telecom and Apple today announced that they will be bringing the highly anticipated iPhone 3G to the Philippines later this year. This might bring a more brighter look to Globe since thousands of users are waiting on its arrival. Accordingly, despite soaring food and oil prices, telcos are expecting to sustain the double digit growth of mobile phone subscribers this year.

Apple is selling is selling the iPhone 3G at $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. The units will also come in black and white colors(plastic blackpating). Of couse,, the price includes a two-year contract with globe.

iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features with 3G networking that is twice as fast as the first generation iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.

At end-2007, the NTC reported that the country's cellular phone subscribers grew 25% to 57.3 million from 42.9 million in 2006. Globe Telecom is eyeing to double its broadband subscribers this year as it capitalizes on its investments in new local and international cable landing stations. The  telecom company's broadband subscriber based surged by 133% to 120,000 last year from 51,426 in 2006. Its broadband service revenues jumped by 96% to P1.2 billion.

As a pioneer, GT launched a text-messaging service dubbed G-Cash, which lets low-income consumers use the prepaid cards in their cellphones to send and receive cash, pay bills and make purchases at retail outlets. Globe, which handles roughly $100 million in G-cash transactions a day, charges a 20-cent fee for any transaction below $20 and 1% cut for any transaction at or above that.

Last month, Globe Telecom launched Globe Labs, with its theme "Head of Future Technology". This is designed to build future technology development test beds. As an initial effort in Globe Labs, they have just concluded the 3G Multi-media Challenge, inviting developers to a contest in voip, mobile gaming, IM, whiteboard, social networking and m-learning using the SIP/IMS (Session Initiation Protocol / IP Multimedia Subsystem ). Globe Labs will also cater to freelance developers to propose new and innovative ideas it can help support through their public portal at www.globelabs.com.ph. Globe  will be providing enterprise support as well as a computer lab where partners can use to develop and deploy their projects.

Two months ago, Globe Telecom offered mobile TV to its subscribers in a service built on a Network Management System or NMS Communication Technology, enabling users to watch their favorite live or made-for-mobile TV programs when and where they want. NMS  technology is becoming a springboard for operators around the world launching mobile TV services. Service providers and operators including RTL Group, Europe's largest TV and radio broadcaster, and CSL, Hongkong's leading mobile operator are capitalizing on growing customer demand for multimedia options by using NMS technology to grow revenues, attract new customers and increase existing customers' loyalty.

GT would increase its investments in cable system and wirelines this year to build its broadband internet infrastructures.GT is alloting $180 million for its broadband business from its $400 million to $450 million capital expenditure.

In November, Globe and Tata Communications partnered to construct a trans-Asian cable system linking the Philippines to Japan, Hongkong and Singapore with onward connectivity to the US. Globe will be the exclusive landing party in the Philippines to this cable system which is scheduled for completion in the second half of this year.

Globe Telecom and Smart Communications, its main rival in the Philippines were included on the top list of 50 leaders, innovators and technology pioneers.

It looks like broadband is the name of the game between SMART and GLOBE, they both trying to soar up the peak of the planet to the point of borrowing money from the banks for infrastructures' development  and even going through a lawsuit against SMART just recently concerning rate descrimination asking the NTC to call for a cease and desist order on SMART promo items allegedly prohibited by the existing NTC policy.

Who is going to survive the cyber-race? Who is going to win the battle of the wireless? I believe, speed and signal are rules to follow for subscribers are looking after /// both companies have good and bad testimonies/feedbacks regarding their  broadband connections. I guess it depends to us users. There is no perfect technology under the sun. We must better know their technical environments, its strengths and weaknesses our provider have in contract before we choose which is which?

Actually SMART has the lead for years now reaching the masses rather than the class-b type of society - their gadgets/cellphones and accessories are sold lower than Globe's/// i guess Globe is left at a distance. Smart is smarter indeed..just a couple of months they resorted to bank's loan for their infrastructures' development .

Want more? New Globe Visibility Plans! While Smart is offering prepaid version of Smart Bro Plug-It! Looks like competition is heating up in the 3G dongle arena. For Smart: http://jimayson.wordpress.com/2008/03/24/smartbro-plug-it-pr epaid-opens-the-floodgates/ This is actually a good, cheap solution especially those who want to stay online when on vacation (and don't want to go through the hassle of connecting via their 3G phone. For Globe: http://www.yugatech.com/blog/telecoms/new-globe-visibility-p lans-799-999-and-1499/ The 800 per month plan of Globe looks attractive since it lets you have a spare net connection without much added cost, plus its mobile.

I changed from Globe to Smart because of its new feature - monthly free text and call amounting to P100.00. This is amazing. I don't need to encourage myself to make amends by enjoying such priviledge this time of crisis
